It goes without saying that the past two years have been exhausting. Breaks are nearly non-existent
and holidays without loved ones may leave many feeling despondent. Time for self-care has
decreased, adding to feelings of burnout.

The New Year is often seen as an opportunity to turn a new leaf and set goals. Phrases such as “New
year, new me” or “My New Year’s Resolution is…” may circulate on social media. Whilst it is
important to set personal goals, these should be attainable, realistic and based on your needs. “New
me” may have various interpretations. It could be physical, emotional, spiritual or social goals and
you may implement certain measures to achieve these goals. However, if they are unrealistic, next
year this time you may be left feeling inadequate by goals you haven’t fulfilled as you expected.
Therefore, it is vital to set small and manageable goals. As a simple example, let’s say that you would
like to increase your core strength and your goal is to hold a plank for 2 minutes. One may
accomplish this over 2 weeks and start off with 20 second hold. The following day you might
increase this to 30 seconds then 40 seconds etc. This scenario may be applied to more complex
goals.

Social media has a major influence on our mental health and displays supposed perfection in a
“moment-in-time” and that’s all it is, a single moment. However, what we don’t see are behind-the-
scenes and the failed attempts. Then there is still editing and photoshop. Definitely an example of
not honouring their true selves! Over this year, get to know your authentic self, explore various
hobbies and find your passion.

Remember to set boundaries, be it social ones with family or friends or work boundaries. Set
boundaries with family or friends that are over-competitive and look down on you. In work settings,
let go of high expectations. Let go of toxic people and environments. We are all on different
journeys. No two timelines look the same so it’s okay to go at your own pace, in your own time. Be
gentle with yourself and acknowledge your progress.

So this year, let’s acknowledge the small stepping stones we need to accomplish our goals and
approach each one with a growth mindset. We are often presented with opportunities disguised as
challenges. These obstacles may be illness, financial or other circumstances that hinder you from
accomplishing your goals. These are often unforeseeable and difficult to mitigate. You may feel
demotivated and this is normal. Don’t be afraid to reach out for help from a family member or
friend. When you have found what makes you happy, grab any opportunity with an open heart and
arms and be ready to receive.

What you deserve is yours!
