The COVID-19 pandemic has increased our awareness of what brings us joy and moments that cause disappointment. It has also caused the unknown to become overwhelming and daunting. Prior to the pandemic, you may have wanted to fulfil certain goals but with new obstacles, you may have put a pause on these goals or lost the vision completely. Whilst this is normal and only human, what counts most is when we stand tall again.

My most memorable disappointment was when I made my debut at an International Ballet Competition in 2018. I performed my first variation and the next day, I found out I didn’t make it through to the next classical round. At that point, I was heartbroken and just wanted to go home. We were 5 minutes away from the theatre, in which time I reflected on how far I had come. Needless to say, we returned to the theatre and I performed my contemporary variation that evening. Another plus side of that day was having a giant chocolate chip cookie and hot chocolate with my mommy and twin sister, which brings me to a vital component of regaining your courage to stand back up again.

Family is an important support structure in your life. They understand you, your progress and your potential. Their sincerity is comforting and makes you feel connected. Afterall, there is a saying that reads “home is where the heart is.” They will make time to listen to you and where possible, offer advice and consolation.

Another way to overcome disappointment would be to have a growth mindset. So instead of asking yourself a question such as “why did this happen to me?”, ask yourself “what can I learn from this experience?” There are many lessons you can learn from disappointing moments. This can range from personal personality traits to how you react to life’s curveballs and you may even discover the ones you can trust. Everyone’s path to overcoming disappointment is different. It may take a few minutes or it may take weeks. It may be straight or curved. What is important is that you get back up again and that you don’t make excuses.

Life is full of surprises and often we only see the negative. Admittedly, we can’t always be optimistic as some situations require you to be realistic. However, we should try to recognise and acknowledge the seemingly insignificant events. You attract the energies with which you think, speak and do. So spread kindness, be grateful and remain humble.
